This assignment tasked me with creating a cover image for a book using only three-dimensionally staged and photographed type. This cover design for 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami brings to light the ethereal and unsettling qualities of the novel.

I used insect pinning needles, raw silkworm thread, and wax paper in the creation of the cover image to reflect the cocoon and insect symbolism found throughout the story. The mirrored text for the author name on the cover and spine parallels the alternate universes that play a major role in 1Q84’s storyline.
