This project tasked me with designing a series of icons for an informational ‘brochure.’ I chose to design a set of cards to educate children about native insects in Chicago.

Each card offers organized information about an insect. Covering the backs of every card is a gridded pattern of the icons (seen below) to play on their square silhouettes and ensure every surface of the product is considered. While iterating the icons, I chose to lean into analog mark-making as opposed to a more digital process. Working from illustrations granted the icons a greater feeling of organicism and playfulness.

The cards’ display typeface feels analytical with playful and organic details, while the monospace body typeface alludes to scientific documents. The swiveling motion and size of the deck were inspired by Brain Quest, a popular educational card game from my childhood.
